PERSONAL RESEARCH & ADVICE

We can provide a full Research and Advice service in all matters relating to Family History. All work is carried out at a standard hourly rate, using all our indexes and sources, plus the facilities and records at the Wiltshire & Swindon Record Office. There is no minimum (or maximum) charge for research undertaken, so please ask for whatever you want.

We can carry out searches in these Record Offices:

  • Wiltshire & Swindon Record Office, Chippenham.

  • Somerset Record Office, Taunton.

  • North Devon Record Office, Barnstaple.

Time Charge: 

£12.00 per hour for research.
(In addition, any searches undertaken in the Wiltshire, Somerset or Devon Record Offices will incur travelling costs of £4:00 per hour, pro-rata.)

BAPTISMS & BURIALS 

We have about 65% of all Wiltshire parishes transcribed for baptism and burial records, which can be searched by individual parish. Our records also include an index of Quaker births and deaths (1650 to 1837) and a database of Swindon Methodist Circuit baptisms (1850-1940), approx. 13,000 entries.

MARRIAGE INDEX 

All of Wiltshire in one searchable database. Fully complete as far as surviving documents allow (about 254,000 marriages, including approx 6000 'stray' marriages from other counties). Earliest marriages date from 1538 when parish records began, and our Index goes up to 1837 with the start of Civil Registration.

  • £3:00 for Individual Marriage Search. This fee includes all entries which match your details.

  • £8:00 for complete list of all entries for one surname and one gender - please specify male or female with your request. 

  • £15:00 for complete list of all entries for one surname, males and females.

Please specify variant spellings of your chosen surname - these will be included in the search.

If the number of matching entries in the index exceeds 200, we will provide a separate quote.

WILLS INDEX

Information taken from the 24 Courts of Wills held in the Wiltshire Record Office, plus the P.C.C. Wills from the National Archives. This index also includes Administrations, Bonds, Inventories, Tuition Bonds, and Inquisitions post-mortem. Dating from 1242 to 1887. About 110,000 Will references.

1851 CENSUS INDEX

All of Wiltshire's 1851 Census returns in one searchable database. Contains about 256,000 names. Lists names, ages, relationships, birthplaces, and enumerator's house reference.

Fees: 
  • £3:00 for Individual household search. A print-out of any or all households which match your details will be provided as part of this service.

  • £8:00 for a complete list of all instances of one surname.

VARIED INDEX

Contains entries dating from 1242 to 1930, and records the personal names of Wiltshire people, from all sources not included in our other indexes, ie: apprentices, settlement examinations & certificates, bastardy, army personnel, removal orders, court papers, directory entries, quarter- sessions, non-conformists, early census entries 17th & 18th centuries, coroners reports, obituaries, tax records, enclosure awards, rents, overseers, pedigrees, machine breakers, transportations, tithe awards, bankrupts, insurance records, poor law union, wills (mentioned in), snippets from newspapers, names taken from numerous reference books on Wiltshire, etc. or anything else recorded in historical documents relating to named persons, etc. (about 360,000 entries and still growing). An invaluable source for putting the flesh on the bones.

Fees: 
  • £3:00 for Individual person search. This fee includes all entries which match your details.

  • £8:00 for complete list of all entries for one surname, up to a maximum of 200 entries.

  • We will provide a separate quote if the number of entries in the index exceeds 200.

LOCATION of DOCUMENTS for WILTSHIRE PARISHES by Dr B. J. Carter.

Each Wiltshire parish has had its documents and their sources listed, and these have been produced in a separate document for each of the 350 parishes. These list: Registers, Church records, Dissenters, Manor records, Tithes, Census, Taxes, Poor Law Union, Wills, Local registrar, Local Societies, Bibliography etc.

£0.50 per parish, if emailed.
£1.00 per parish plus postage, if printed.
£19.95 for complete set on CD-Rom, plus postage.

Expenses:

  • Register entry copies can be obtained upon request, at a cost of £3:25 each.
  • Copies obtained at the same time as Record Office research, are £1:25 each.
  • Any searches undertaken in the Wiltshire, Somerset or North Devon Record Offices will incur travelling costs of £4:00 per hour, pro-rata.

10% discount offered on search charges only, to Wiltshire Family History Society members if you quote your membership number (excludes postage costs and research work).
